Kirby employees give time to read

  • March 1, 2017

Kirby has been supporting the Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI) Business Action on Education programme for many years through its involvement in the Schools’ Business Partnership.  Seeing the positive impact of its involvement in the Schools’ Business Partnership programme, Kirby has extended its support for the action on education initiative to include Time to Read.

Time to Read is a reading enhancement initiative which provides 2nd class (7 to 9 year old) children with an opportunity to receive reading support from a business volunteer. 10 of Kirby’s employees have volunteered to take part in the reading programme and support the second class students at Our Lady Queen of Peace National School in Limerick.  Kirby also sponsored the purchase of new books for the school in conjunction with BITCI.

The programme works by volunteers visiting the school for an hour a week and sharing this time between two children.  While at the school, volunteers read with their assigned students on a one-to-one basis with the aim of increasing the enjoyment of and confidence in reading whilst encouraging self-discovery for the participating children.

The programme will run for 20 weeks and as well as school visits, the volunteers will accompany the students on a library visit and welcome them to Kirby’s Limerick office as part of a workplace visit.

BITCI’s Business Action on Education programme works with Ireland’s leading companies with the objective of making a positive impact on education nationally and in local communities. Kirby has been supporting the programme for over eight years.
