Kirby supports World Diabetes Day 2015

  • November 13, 2015

Saturday, November 14th 2015 is World Diabetes Day and Kirby is showing its support for the campaign by raising awareness of diabetes and promoting healthy lifestyle choices.

Currently, there are over 200,000 people with diabetes in Ireland and according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) this is expected to grow to over 278,000 people with the condition by 2030.

The health and wellbeing of staff is paramount at Kirby and good health is vital for a safe and productive working environment.  To raise awareness of diabetes within the organisation, Kirby created a number of posters which contain information on the condition, advice for managing diabetes and tips for leading a healthy lifestyle.

Mike Casey, EHS advisor with Kirby, has been a diabetic for over 30 years and is an advocate of raising awareness of the condition within the organisation.  ‘I have been an insulin dependent diabetic for over 30 years.  I have never missed a day’s work due to diabetes and I have completed 25 marathons.  One of the most important things with diabetes is to make people aware that you have the condition, particularly your site supervisor and colleagues.’

‘You can lead a perfectly normal life with diabetes if you manage the condition in the right way and opt for healthy lifestyle choices’ continued Casey.

According to the IDF, a healthy lifestyle could prevent up to 70% of type 2 diabetes and can play an important role in the effective management of type 1 diabetes.
