Project Description

Brief Description:

Alstom was appointed as EPC OEM contractor for the construction of a new 431MWe CCGT gas fired power plant in Cork, Ireland. Alstom appointed Kirby as overall electrical and controls/instrumentation contractor in addition to entrusting us with the delivery of all mechanical HVAC building services and electro-chlorination piping services. This was a significant project for Kirby as it drew upon our extensive experience as a full service multi-disciplinary engineering services contractor to the power sector to ensure the new plant was successfully handed over without interruption to existing generating capacity on-site.

Supporting Business Continuity

In addition to our work-scope on the new station, the end user, ESB, relied on Kirby to change out the existing station’s DCS control system for a new ABB DCS system while minimising any interference with site operations.

We also assumed full responsibility for the detailed design of HVAC building services to conform to client functional specifications in addition to the design development of lighting and general services on-site.

Our work extended from the outgoing 500MVa transformer into the turbine hall via a 20kV bus-duct, HRSG building, control building and all ancillary areas such as De-min, gas treatment, water intake etc. As with all industrial projects, the necessary resources required to compile all relevant documentation into turnover packs (TOPS) and handover documentation was assigned to the project.

Project Management Capabilities

The management of materials on site and control of free issued equipment was also a critical part of our overall project management activity on site. We fully utilised the work methodologies which underpin our overall Integrated Project Execution Plan (IPEP) to deliver this project in full cooperation with our client, end user representatives and other trade contractors.
