Project Description

Brief Description

Kirby was engaged by Siemens to undertake all MV/LV, electrical and instrumentation works associated with the construction of a new 842MWe CCGT gas fired power station in Newport, South Wales. This project was similar to one previously undertaken by Kirby for Siemens in Southampton, UK.

Our work-scope involved the installation of all:

  • MV transformers, auxiliary transformers and power control centres
  • Main MV bus-duct system including specialised aluminium welding
  • HV links and cabling to the National Grid
  • Containment systems throughout the plant
  • All MV/LV and ELV cable systems
  • All instrumentation process piping and associated cable terminations
  • Testing and handover documentation

Strong Client Relationships

This significant project reinforced our already strong relationship with Siemens AG, who Kirby have worked with for over 20 years on both fossil and gas fired power stations. Our work has involved, not only the construction of new facilities, but also the installation of environmental technologies such as FGDs and SCRs within existing coal fired stations.

Overcoming Challenges

Power generating facilities are often located in sparsely populated industrial areas. This particular station was located in a remote area which necessitated Kirby having to put in place a logistics plan to accommodate our workers and transport them to the site each day. In advance of mobilising on site we put considerable effort into sourcing our logistics partners who provided the necessary facilities to ensure our 120 site personnel were cared for properly.
