Brief Description

Kirby is the largest provider of specialist high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) design and construction services to the utilities and renewables sector in Ireland.

Our in-house transmission and distribution team can support a project from application stage through to design, procurement, construction and subsequent grid connection. When ABB were looking for partners to build their AC/DC convertor station to support their 500MW HVDC interconnector project between Ireland and the UK, they selected Kirby based on our expertise on HV transmission systems.

Our scope of supply on the project included:

  • Construction of Portan 400kV AIS sub-station to Eirgrid functional specifications
  • Pre-commissioning of Portan 400kV AIS sub-station to Eirgrid functional specifications
  • Installation of 400kV AIS switchgear and filters
  • Installation of 400/260kV 560MVA transformers
  • Installation of 260kV switchgear and filters
  • Installation of 260kV reactor
  • Construction of AC/DC valve hall (including cooler system)
  • Installation of DC switchgear and filters
  • Installation of earthing and lightning protection
  • Commissioning assistance to ABB for all the above works
