Project Description

Brief Description

Kirby was engaged by GlaxoSmithKline to undertake all mechanical and electrical works associated with the conversion of an old de-palletiser area into a self-contained GMP bottling facility.

The electrical scope of works included the installation, testing and commissioning of low voltage switchboard, local distribution boards, low voltage distribution cabling, small power, earthing systems, fire detection and alarm, cable containment systems, general lighting, lighting control, emergency lighting, communication and IT and process cabling.

The mechanical scope of works included the inspection, testing and commissioning of all HVAC systems in addition to pipework systems serving chilled water, cooling water, steam, high pressure compressed air and CO2 lines.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the key challenges we experienced on this particular project was the constraint associated with working in a live production environment, with strict GMP procedures. Daily client meetings were used as a tool to keep all parties informed of weekly planned activities so as to eliminate any unplanned downtime to the plant’s production cycle.

Strict Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures were also implemented to ensure that there was no interruption to the utility services feeding the live plant.
