Project Description

Brief Description

Kirby is a key provider of MEP services to GSK in the UK. In addition to significant work undertaken on their Worthing site, we have also worked closely with them on their ‘Clav’ production expansion project in GSK Irvine, Scotland.

This project was a combination of new build external areas and building extensions to existing production areas, all undertaken within a live production environment with ATEX/hazardous area zoning.

Our work-scope included the fabrication and installation of 6,500m of piping services, 2,500sq.m of classified ductwork services and all associated electrical/instrumentation services.

We were also responsible for the installation of process and utility equipment ranging from chillers, tankage, solvent tower, crystallisers, dryers, centrifuges etc. The most significant element of this work involved the off-site M&E works associated with the 24m high solvent tower and its subsequent erection on site and final services hook-up.

Our piping scope extended across all material grades with significant tie-ins to existing systems within the membrane production area in particular. This work, in addition to the hot/cold loop checking of all instruments numbering approximately 1,000, took place within several major shut-down periods.

As lead MEP contractor, we had overall responsibility for the coordination of all services on site and worked closely with both GSK and WSP to develop the integrated 3D model to ensure maximum construction benefit in terms of build productivity, adherence to program and overall Q-EHS performance.

Integrated Project Delivery

Kirby believe that effective contractor engagement should begin as early as possible during the design and construction planning phase to leverage our build know-how and commissioning expertise. We adopted an integrated project team approach with GSK, WSP and Kirby partaking in triumvirate planning and coordination sessions to deliver optimum site performance so as to meet aggressive project schedules.

Overcoming Challenges

A key challenge on the Irvine project related to schedule and site logistical constraints. Kirby worked very closely with both GSK and WSP.
