Project Description

Brief Description

Kirby secured the contract to install all electrical and instrumentation services associated with a major polymer production plant expansion on the Victrex COMAH-classified site in Rotherham, UK.

Given the hazardous nature of operations and on-going production throughout the project timeframe, Kirby’s reputation as an experienced E&I contractor was considered paramount during the contractor selection process. The expertise of Kirby personnel directly involved in installation work was also crucial to our selection for this project.

Our previous experience working for petro-chemical clients such as Neste Oil, Shell and ENI, reassured Victrex that Kirby had the expertise required to safely install all E&I services associated with the centrefuge tower, slurry process and external utility plant such as cooling towers, storage tanks and pumping systems.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the key challenges associated with the project was access and the physical constraints of working within the 5-storey top-down process centrefuge tower. To overcome this challenge and to deliver the project on time, Kirby adopted a flexible work pattern, involving weekend and shift work, closely co-ordinating our activity with that of the process pipework contractor using daily whiteboard meetings in order to ensure all works were carried out in an efficient manner. This resulted in reduced non-productive time and significantly alleviated congestion in what was a densely-populated working environment.
