PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Kirby was awarded the contract to upgrade all instrumentation systems associated with an automation renewal programme for two process trains on site. In addition to the cable and containment installation, preparatory work was required to fully assemble instrument housings for installation and subsequent termination during the shut-down period. There was also significant glanding and termination work required within the instrument and cross connect cabinets and field junction boxes, which preceded hot loop checking of all field instruments by Kirby, working in cooperation with Neste Oil personnel. The fabrication and installation of all stainless steel impulse tubing was also undertaken by Kirby.

The 2015 shut-down was the biggest turnaround in the refinery’s history, with over 4,000 personnel on site. There was a seven week pre-shut-down activity period, followed by an intensive four-week timeframe when all refinery operations were shut-down to facilitate the necessary work.

SCOPE OF WORK

Kirby scope of works included the installation and commissioning of all control and instrumentation services.

The instrumentation systems installed by Kirby included:

• Impulse Tubing
• SIS
• DCS

The total project meterage consisted of 90,000m of cable, 3,500m of containment, 3,332m of impulse piping and 2,700 number of instruments.
