PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project completed by Kirby Group Engineering consisted of electrical works for 18MW Tier 3 Data Centre as well as full civil & electrical turnkey delivery of the transmission connection – A contestable TSO 110kV indoor Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation, 2 number 110kV underground grid line circuits, approx. 1km and 2.5km in length, 2 number 110 kV/10kV customer transformers and 10kV customer substation, with total Kirby labour on-site reaching 142.

DATA CENTRE

Kirby was appointed to complete the electrical works for converting the former manufacturing facility to a modern Tier 3 Data Centre facility. The works included full BIM co-ordination of all services, procurement and installation of all electrical materials and completion of all testing & commissioning over three project phases.

Phased IST had to be carried out due to the client’s requirement for early occupation of Phase 1 of the data centre. All installation and commissioning within 6 Data Halls of 18,000m² building was completed within 10 months, which included 1,000m² office space fit-out. The compressed schedule required flexibility, shift-work and alignment in order to achieve all milestone dates.

SCOPE OF WORK

Kirby scope of works included the installation and commissioning of all electrical services.

The electrical systems installed by Kirby included:

• MV Distribution
• LV Distribution
• Generator Connections
• UPS
• General and Emergency Lighting
• General Service Power
• Mechanical Plant Service Power
• Earthing and Bonding
• Hot Aisle Containment

Installed plant items included 90 number sub-distribution boards, 12 number generators, 8 number transformers and entire MV/LV distribution system. The total project meterage consisted of 50,000m of cable and 25,000m of containment.

SUBSTATION

The project comprised of civil and electrical turnkey delivery of the transmission connection for 18MW Data Centre. As Kirby was involved from an early stage of the project, we prepared and submitted the following packages of application:

• Planning permission for the substation buildings and associated equipment
• Confirmation of exempted development for 110 kV underground cable circuits
• Fire Certificates
• A completion certificate for both the 110kV GIS building and the MV building as per the building regulations (BCAR)

Kirby ensured that all aspects of the project have been addressed from design and construction perspective, provided the role of PSDP/ PSCS and managed the interfacing with the following project stakeholders:

• The Data Centre Contractor
• The Employer’s Project Manager
• The Engineer
• EirGrid
• ESB Networks
• Health and Safety Authority

SCOPE OF WORK

Kirby scope of works included the design and build contract for the engineering, procurement, construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning (IPP works only) of the electrical and civil works listed below:

• Primary Equipment Transmission Connection
• Primary Equipment Distribution Connection
• Earthing and Bonding
• Control and Protection System
• MV Cable Connection System
• Transmission Underground Cables
• Distribution Underground Cables
• DC Battery Systems
• Generator
• UPS
• General and Emergency Lighting
• General Service Power
